Whooping Cough  (Pertussis)…has an incubation period of 7 – 10 days.  During the first 2 – 7 days there is usually no fever. A runny nose will begin with a lack of appetite and a mild but increasing cough evolves.  During 1- 8 weeks outbursts of multiple coughs will occur that are  provoked by exertion.  In 6 month to 5 year olds the inspiratory gasp or “whoop” eventually develops.  12-32% of adults with a persistent cough (more than 2 weeks), have Pertussis.  Antibiotics prevent the spread of the bacteria.  Seek medical attention if you think you have Whooping Cough.
