How Do You Test for Food Allergies?
If you are experiencing symptoms such as swelling, vomiting, or rashes, this could indicate a food allergy. However, symptoms vary from person to person, even if they share the same food allergy. We can confirm an allergy by using allergy testing and then begin treatment.
Another reason to consider allergy testing is if you or your young children have skin conditions such as eczema. These skin conditions often come with a higher risk of food allergies. Additionally, testing the younger siblings is recommended if an older sibling has a food allergy to help avoid allergic reactions.
At Allergy & Clinical Immunology Associates, our allergy testing may involve blood tests, skin prick tests, or oral food tests. For our blood test, we will take a sample of your blood and check for proteins that trigger food allergy symptoms.
With the skin prick test, we will use a small needle to insert extracts of potential allergic food under the skin. If you have irritation on the site, you are likely allergic to that food.
You will consume small amounts of the food for the oral food test, and if you show symptoms, it will confirm that you are allergic.
